Sled Dog Challenge

Dinner Plain Alpine Village will play host to the Altitude 5000 Sled Dog Challenge, to be held over the weekend of August 10th/11th. Australia’s original and most prestigious Sled Dog race will once again see Sled Dog teams from across Australia competing for victory on the snow-capped peaks of Mount Hotham. 2013 marks an important milestone in the history of the event as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the race. More than 70 Mushers (dog team drivers), and in excess of 350 sled dogs are expected to compete in this year’s event across 4 classes. With the sport maturing (and some of the mushers and dogs!), the popular touring class will be on the program, giving older, retired dog sled teams an opportunity to once again run on the snow in a less competitive environment.

The Geebung vs. Cuff 'n' Collar Polo Match is an annual event whereby the 'High Country Cattlemen' take on the 'City Slicker' team in a polo match, named after the historic poem 'The Geebung Polo Club' by Banjo Patterson. Taking place at Horsehair Plain (adjacent to the Hotham Airport), only 10 minutes from Dinner Plain, it’s a great day out for the whole family. With events such as kids running races, a giant ‘Tug-O-War’, frozen chook throwing, live music, fashion and the infamous Easter egg drop from a helicopter, who could miss it??  And don’t forget the main event, the Polo Match. Approximately 3000 are expected to revel in the atmosphere and get into the festival spirit. Gates open at 10am, Polo begins at Midday.
